This is Figgy. He came through our property a few weeks ago....very skinny and hungry. So we started feeding him. He is a dinner-time guy (doesn't come for breakfast). Then one evening he showed up, had his dinner, rolled over to show me his belly when I saw that something was very wrong . Actually, I completely freaked out when I saw that under his chin and down his neck, all of his fur was missing, then skin was wet and there was a hole!!!! A hole in his neck.
I ran inside to tell my husband that Figgy was in distress and we had to do something. We also had to make sure that Figgy didn't wander off for his evening walk.
We called every emergency vet - they were all either CLOSED!!! yes closed or had to room. So, we went onto the BC SPCA website - no one answers any of the options after hours. The instructions were to call the RCMP or police for after hours assistance - we couldn't find a non-emergency after hours number. Next we tried Coastal Animal Control - they were also closed.
We called Bosleys (the store where we buy all of our cat food for our own cats) looking for a phone number for help because all the local rescues just have email...no phone number. And we needed help now...not when an email can be replied to. Thankfully the store had one of the rescues call us. The rescue was willing to find Figgy a vet appointment for the following day but we had to be able to keep him overnight. We didn't have any appropriate facility to keep an outdoor cat safely inside until some time the next day when a vet could see him.
So...we messaged Stray Cats of South Cowichan...hoping for a miracle. We needed a place for Figgy to stay safely overnight. An a miracle did happen. They had one open spot. Between my husband and I we loaded Figgy into our cloth cat carrier and took him for a 45 minute car ride to Stray Cats of South Cowichan. Figgy stayed overnight and one more day before they could get him a vet appointment.
At the appointment...Figgy's neck wound was addressed. He received 7 stitches and is now on anti-biotics (plus as a bonus the vet was able to neuter him at the same time).
While Figgy heals, we want to help Stray Cats of South Cowican with their vet bills which are currently in excess of $9000. We are so grateful to them for helping Figgy because without them I don't know what we would have done.
