We have been asked by supporters who know Paradise Park's conservation work and enjoyed their visits over many years, to set up a fund to help recovery from the damage caused when storm Goretti hit Cornwall on 9th January.
All our birds are precious but our high profile species are parrots including the Mitchell's Lorikeet, Lear's and Blue-throated Macaws and the Red-billed Chough, plus Red Pandas and Red Squirrels. Precautions were put in place before the storm with staff doing everything they could to protect the birds and mammals.
Everyone was so concerned overnight, hearing the strength of the wind and knowing we had to sit and wait it out. Checks started before dawn on Friday morning, fixing immediate damage to aviaries and sadly it was found that two birds, a Bishop Weaver and a Sun Conure had not made it through the storm. We were so worried because of the strength of the wind, the fallen trees and missing roof panels, and were relieved it was not a lot worse.
Damage at the Park included:
A big rip in netting in a chough aviary, thankfully all were safe. Golden Eagle aviary partially collapsed but Talis was fine. Tropical House had cracked glass, roof panels over wire which give shelter from rain had blown off in numerous places. Two massive fallen trees near the Lear's Macaw. Lots more fallen trees through the woodland walk damaging fencing and an electrical cabinet. A huge branch through the bridge to ‘Parrot Jungle’. Large trees down near the Fun Farm and in front of Glanmor House at the centre of the Park. Large fan vent on the JungleBarn roof shifted sideways, roof panel off the cafe. Branches, twigs and leaf litter debris everywhere around the Park.
Many staff came in on their day off, plus several local friends helped as we got started on critical repairs and began removal of trees. The Park closed for 5 days after the storm to make the site safe again for visitors, but repairs will continue for some time as there is still plenty to be done.
If you can help it would be much appreciated.
With heartfelt thanks from all of us at Paradise Park xx
