Stories from America’s Landscape
What can we do to be good ancestors? How can we leave this world a better place than we found it?
Our community is predominately white. How can our white children learn about children of different cultures? How are their life experiences and emotions the same? How do they differ? How do we move from mystery to curiosity to understanding to delight?
Books! Of course, BOOKS! This is a project to enrich the lives of local children by exposing them to children from diverse cultures and ethnicities, to begin the uphill struggle toward a gentler, safer, more inclusive, more tolerant world through the power of story. Join us as we place diverse literature, stories that feature children from diverse backgrounds, into the K-8 classrooms of Lakewood Public Schools.
For decades, all children have learned to love reading through the likes of beloved characters like Encyclopedia Brown, Harry Potter, Junie B. Jones, and Charlotte’s Fern. Many children, on the other hand, have been deprived of valuable life lessons from treasured characters like Styx Malone, Zoe Washington, the Gaither sisters, Kenny Watson, Princess Truly, Genesis and so many more.
Help Jim and me provide more culturally and ethnically diverse libraries for our local classrooms. For many titles, my generous friends at Scholastic Books will turn every $10 donation into bookS, every $20 into even more! Thank you for any help you can give, for being a better ancestor, for supporting children and literacy, for being part of our village, part of a solution. Thank you!
Please share, share, share! Invite others to join us. Contribute online or feel free to contact me personally.
