Help Reduce the Spread of COVID-19 with Face Masks
Donation protected
Hello! My name is Mandika. I am currently a junior at University High School, Fresno. Over the span of the last few weeks, I have been dismayed by the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which continues to take many lives.
My gratitude and respect for the medical personnel who are on the frontlines, risking their's and their family's lives daily, is simply immeasurable. It has compelled me to do all that I can to help mitigate their burden. Hospitals around the world are facing a shortage of medical personal protective equipment (PPE), including those in Fresno, and are appealing to the public to assist them by making and donating homemade face masks.
Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recommended that wearing cloth face coverings could reduce the transmission of Coronavirus. The New England Journal of Medicine has stated that the virus "...can float in aerosol droplets—less than 5 microns across—for up to 3 hours, and remain infectious," which means it may be transmitted simply by breathing. This underlines the need and urgency for face masks.
Therefore, I have used the scholarship money that I won from the Fresno County Academic Decathlon to order my first batch of supplies. Since then, my school has rallied around the cause and we are hoping to enlist students in our community to help protect the healthcare workers who do so much to protect us. We are setting up a drop off box at the University High School office. If you happen to be able to make or have any PPE, it would be much appreciated if you could kindly drop them off there. If not, we would also be truly grateful for any financial donation.
All the money donated will go directly into purchasing supplies for this endeavor.
Thank you for your consideration of this project which is deeply personal for me, as both my parents are physicians.
Warmest regards,
Mandika Swartz
