S and her daughter are facing eviction from their housing and need financial support to allow her and her daughter housing stability after S was recently fired from a nonprofit in which she experienced pervasive forms of anti Black racism and misogynoir, including gendered pay disparity, being excluded from staff supports and benefits afforded to white and non parenting staff, and other racially demeaning treatment and racist commentary by the white cishet executive director in leadership.
Having not been able to pay rent between April and July 2026, S is in rental arrears of approximately $8000, and with an eviction hearing scheduled in August, S will need to come up with funds to pay her landlord to have any meaningful chance at not being evicted. She is also using the funds for rent, utilities, and groceries.
S is a Black queer single mother, a dedicated human rights advocate, a champion for prisoners' justice and Black, Indigenous, poor and oppressed communities more broadly, and more importantly, a devoted parent to a teen whom she's raised primarily solo since S became a mom at 16. Her daughter is a brilliant human who is homeschooled and is completing high school credits to graduate in the fall, a milestone achievement that has been delayed because of their financial precarity, which, along with rent, has made it difficult to afford groceries, hydro, phone, internet and tutoring to support homeschooling.
