Tahi Opu (Guardians of the Sea) works to secure vital ocean resources for coastal communities, livelihoods and nature itself.
Our mission is to stop illegal fishing, support implementation of existing marine laws and increase ocean protection.
Our programmes across the globe allow us to support government, communities and fellow NGO's to increase compliance, strengthen governance and embolden enforcement.
The number one issue still facing the world's oceans is illegal fishing. Despite developments in technology, IUU fishing has not declined enough over the last 20 years, accounting for $10-20 billion of annual losses.
Over the same time many marine protected areas have been created. But there is a large variation in levels of MPA effectiveness, leading to so-called 'Paper Parks' with hardly any protection at all.
By using the most effective documentary, monitoring, surveillance, and enforcement tools, Tahi Opu aims to increase levels of protection across all areas of the ocean.
Please help us raise money for drones, nighttime binoculars, motorbikes and a small boat, to equip the Fisheries Inspectors with the tools they need to protect their waters from illegal fishing activity.
