Stop Cleanaways’ Landfill Expansion in Dardanup

Dardanup Environmental Action Group are fighting a David and Goliath battle against Cleanaway who have revealed their Masterplan for a 50% increase of their already mountainous landfill site in the Shire of Dardanup.

Currently towering 70m above the adjacent irrigated prime farmlands they plan to go another 36m higher making it visible through the Ferguson Valley tourist route. Not only is this landfill mountain at the gateway to Ferguson Valley tourist and fine wine destination but it is also over the major recharge point of the three aquifers of the SW of WA that are used by the entire region for mains water.

The site receives Technically Enhanced Radioactive Titanium refinery tailings from Tronox which is highly soluble and arguably should be stored in a site controlled under the Mines Act.

We believe this twenty year old site is full and already poses grave risks for the future of agriculture and water supply in the region. It can not be allowed to expand.

Liner systems in the cells are expected to fail, having a varied and limited lifespan. Will the toxic cocktail of drill muds, hospital waste, Wren Oil waste, loads of PFAS and municipal waste from all around the state eventually leach into our precious water supply? This noxious and hazardous industry should never have been allowed in such a fragile location,

Cleanaway have recently taken their plans to a Joint Development Assessment Panel (JDAP) and will likely continue on to a State Administrative Tribunal (SAT).
