Long Island has a garbage and environmental racism crisis!
The current policy on Long Island is to burn a large portion of household waste at the Covanta-Hempstead incinerator in Westbury, located near a majority Black, Latinx, working-class community; and then send that ash to the Brookhaven Landfill located in North Bellport, also a majority Black, Latinx, Indigenous and working-class community.
The Brookhaven Landfill Action and Remediation Group (BLARG) is a coalition that has come together to support a sustainable and just solution to Long Island’s waste crisis. We represent a number of different organizations and live in various affected hamlets and villages throughout Brookhaven Town in Suffolk County and beyond.
After years of promising that the Brookhaven Landfill would close in 2024, and in the face of persistent community complaints about the odors, potential toxicity, blight, and environmental risk of the Landfill, this past August, the Brookhaven Town Council submitted a plan to build a NEW ashfill adjacent to the existing Landfill site.
We insist that where the Landfill is concerned, Close Means Close! We are demanding that the Town of Brookhaven commit to a fully transparent engagement process, one that recognizes that this is an environmental justice impact zone. Specifically, public town halls and hearings where residents can speak and be heard, and where decision-makers answer the community’s questions. This process should not be completed behind closed doors.
Help us bring attention to this vital issue by funding our outreach to the surrounding communities through postcards, signs and other media.
