Long story short...my mom thought she had sciatica on the left side of her butt area which eventually the pain started shooting down her leg, seeing a chiropractor to ease the pain or at least help lessen the pain didn’t help. My mom begged for an MRI to be done but kept getting denied by her insurance because there wasn’t enough proof that she needed one for the pain she was having. Another x-ray was done by a urologist because one that was done previous showed kidney stones which wasn’t at all the problem for her pain. Her results came back and it was her urologist that broke the news that the pain she is having is probably from a mass that didn’t look normal and the kidney stones is nothing to worry about. Finally an MRI was done and confirmed she has cancer...what type of cancer was the question. A biopsy was done a day before her surgery for a more definitive approach since they didn’t know what type of tumor it was. CHONDROSARCOMA. What is it? Dr. Reid Hoshide removed whatever tumor he could that was suffocating my mom’s nerves (the reasoning for her pains). This cancer is located in her sacrum area which is where her nerves that controls her bladder and bowel are. My mom had high doses of radiation for nine weeks, Monday through Friday. Unfortunately, less than a year after her first diagnosis and surgery to remove the tumor it spread to her right side in a different area of her pelvis. Hawaii doesn’t have a doctor that can remove the tumor and she’s being referred to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas or hopefully a doctor in Stanford Medical, California. Chondrosarcoma is a rare type of cancer that usually begins in the bones and can also occur in soft tissue. My mom’s pain occurred throughout the day and was worst at night. Pain meds didn’t help her at all. Standing was her only relief and that meant sleepless nights for over a year. Chondrosarcomas are resistant to chemo and radiation. Surgery is the most effective treatment although the use of radiation somewhat helps to slow the growth. This fundraiser will help with travel/lodging expenses and anything else that occurs.
