<div>Anti-Asian racism has a long history in Canada. COVID-19 has fueled racist rhetoric, resulting in another year of escalated violence against the Asian diaspora in Canada. In 2021 alone, there were <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1U2ki5j-h9y229pAwx-KkqjK0HmAIo9h9/view" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">943 reports</a> of racist attacks across Canada, representing a 47% increase in <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/193CdlC8uq623VRlAzoO3ShfDTEutXQi2/view" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reports compared to 2020</a>. This knowledge is made possible in part from funds raised last year through the 2021 <a href="../../../f/stop-asian-hate-support-asian-canadians-fund" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Support Asian Canadians Fund</a>.

<div><em>The Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter (CCNCTO) hosts </em><a href="https://www.covidracism.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Fight COVID Racism</em></a><em>. Project 1907’s </em><a href="https://www.project1907.org/reportingcentre" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>reporting centre</em></a><em> is in collaboration with Elimin8hate. Data from both tools have been brought together in a joint effort to analyze and better understand the national landscape of anti-Asian racism. </em>

<div><strong>Another year of racist attacks: surge in anti-Asian violence in Canada</strong>

<div>According to <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1U2ki5j-h9y229pAwx-KkqjK0HmAIo9h9/view" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">data collected</a> in 2021 and analyzed by the <a href="https://www.ccnctoronto.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter</a> and <a href="https://www.project1907.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Project 1907</a>, reports were submitted in every province and territory. Attacks are still happening mostly in public spaces, such as parks, streets, and sidewalks.

<li><strong>Women continue to submit the majority of incidents, making up nearly two-thirds of reports.</strong> The number of incidents reported by women and people of marginalized genders have all increased compared to 2020.
</li>

<li><strong>Reports by South Asian and Southeast Asian people increased dramatically compared to 2020, </strong>by 318% and 121%, respectively.
</li>

<li><strong>Reports by children and adolescents (18 years and under) increased by 286% </strong>compared to 2020. Reports by young adults (ages 19 to 35) also increased by 43%.
</li>

<li><strong>Reports of assault (being coughed at/spat on) increased by 42%</strong> in 2021 compared to 2020.
</li>

<li>Incidents occurring online also spiked, increasing by 132% compared to 2020.
</li>

<li>New offender/perpetrator profile analysis this year finds that <strong>nearly 75% of submitted incidents report offenders/perpetrators as men and white.</strong>

<div>All donations will be received and administered by the <a href="https://www.ccnctoronto.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter</a>.<br /><br />

<div>Funds will be used specifically to support the joint effort of the <a href="https://www.ccnctoronto.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter</a> and <a href="https://www.project1907.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Project 1907</a>’s data collection initiatives, including bringing their respective platforms together into one centralized reporting centre for anti-Asian racism experienced by the Asian diaspora in Canada. Moving data collection to one centralized system allows for improved data integrity, reduced data redundancy, a more accessible user experience and savings in time and cost.<br /><br />

<div>Funds will be used to complete a rigorous review of the research questions and methodology, expand language access and build a secure new tool that allows our communities to maintain self-determined uses of the data collected. In 2021, 100% of the funding for the analysis and writing of the <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1U2ki5j-h9y229pAwx-KkqjK0HmAIo9h9/view" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">2021 national report</a> was crowdsourced and community-generated through GoFundMe’s centralized <a href="../../../f/stop-asian-hate-support-asian-canadians-fund" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Support Asian Canadians Fund</a>. <div>COVID-19 related racism against Asians and Asian Canadians is on the rise. Instead of being recognized as contributing significantly to the fight against COVID-19, Asian communities in Canada have been met with racism, violence and attacks.<br /><br />

<div>One account from an incident report read, <em>“Two males in their late 20s / early 30s attacked me from behind during my morning walk. They kicked me repeatedly for a couple of minutes, while shouting at me to go back to China with the COVID-19 virus that I brought.”<br /><br /></em>

<div>Canada continues to have a higher number of anti-Asian racism reports per capita than the United States. The incidences reported per capita in Canada are double those reported in the United States. COVID-19 has only revealed the long-standing history of targeted racism against Asian Canadians.<br /><br />

<div>The severity and pervasiveness of anti-Asian racism reported requires <strong>immediate action and calls for lasting social change. <br /><br /></strong>
