Where there's an Open Cast Mine there's a Risk

Hello, we are a concerned group of families living beside an area that is going to be turned into an Open Cast Mine in Magheracloone, Co. Monaghan, Ireland, if the Mining Company gets planning permission.
The boundary of the proposed Open Cast Mine is located less than 50 metres from our local Primary School, Church, Community Centre and our homes.
There already exists an old underground mine in the area which has been closed since the 1980s. The company who owns the old mine operates an Open Cast Mine close by.
In 2018, the mining company had a problem with excess water so they allowed this water to flow into the old underground mine, despite many reports in their possession that stated that water should not be allowed into this mine.
What happened next should not have been a surprise to the company, the pillars holding up the old mine structure collapsed and huge sinkholes appeared in the land above the old mine. Parts of the GAA football field and the Community Centre collapsed into these holes just 24 hours after children had been playing on the field and using the Centre. It was a miracle that no one was killed or injured. It has caused significant stress and worry to families living and working in the area.
In 2022, the Mining Company put in a planning application for a new Open Cast Mine here, extending their current mine by 120 acres. If planning is granted this Mine will be one of the largest Open Cast Mines in Ireland and will cause huge environmental and quality of life issues.
A submission/objection has been lodged with An Bord Planala, (the Irish Planning Board) by our group.
We are asking for donations for the following:
- To employ Geologists, Hydrologists and Legal Advisors to fight this environmental cause
- Raise awareness of the impact of mining on the environment
- Advocate for sustainable alternatives to Open Cast Mining
We would greatly appreciate any assistance you can make, together we can protect our environment.
Join us in this crucial fight.
