Stop Airlie Beach High Rise

Story

Save Our Foreshore Inc (successfully defending public foreshores since 2004) is going to court to protect Airlie Beach public foreshores, the character and amenity of our town, lifestyle and tourism brand.  Please help us raise community funds to appeal against Council’s decision to hand over precious public parkland for its access road and approve an over-height 47m foreshore tower in Port of Airlie (12 storeys) in conflict with the town plan of 18m (5 storeys) for this zone.  2242 community and visitor objections were lodged against. ZERO in support.  Based on the facts, we believe Council is not qualified to make such decisions and failed to consult appropriately with the community & tourism industry about such a radical change for the region.  The Whitsunday Regional Council does not have the vision for our prosperous low-rise future. Nor comprehension of decades of low rise, relaxed village style branding and investment by business and tourism.   Instead, they have handed Airlie Beach's brand image over to a development in receivership  (Meridien/Balmain Group, Sydney) that has pushed over-height limits in one application after another.  And receives approval time after time.
