STOP A 40 YEAR SENTENCE
This family is currently fighting the criminal justice system for their brother and son, Mulugeta, who is currently facing 40 YEARS IN PRISON. He is only nineteen years old.
He is from Eritrea, East Africa. Their family was forced to flee the civil war, and has survived unfathomable violence and instability in their journey to the United States, where they now hold refugee status.
Since arriving to Baltimore the family has received very few social services, and has moved in and out of apartment buildings, school to school, neighborhood to neighborhood seeking basic stability and support. This family of eight arrived to Baltimore with no English, no financial stability, and minimal consistent guidance. They have worked in every possible way to survive in this city, in this country.
Black African refugees face disproportionate levels of violence when seeking asylum in the United States and Europe, and are the victims of anti-Black racism, policing, and poverty.
MULUGETA NEEDS A LAWYER. He and his family have very few resources to combat the prison industrial complex that has swallowed Mulugeta, and holds him captive. Private lawyers in the city of Baltimore are financially inaccessible for those who need them most. The family is requesting funds to hire a private lawyer to represent Mulugeta in a court that has already indicted him, with no hearing.

It is an opportunity to address the racism and surveillance embedded in our criminal justice system. It is an opportunity to support refugees as they continue to navigate the United States.
