I should start by sharing that my financial life was devastated by a car accident in 2013 in which I was T-boned at 65 mph while waiting at a stoplight. The young man who ran into me turned out to be a drug dealer with no legal assets, driving on a revoked license. In short: he had nothing to contribute to my care.
Then my medical insurance company denied me coverage of my hospital and rehabilitation bills because I was out-of-state where the crash happened. I had sustained serious concussions in the crash that left me unable to work for 3 years, worsening my financial condition.
Cut to: Last week I opened a small self-storage unit in Berkeley, Ca. for my few remaining things. I have sold, given away and thrown away almost all my belongings in order to reduce storage bills. After I was assigned a locker, I put my most important belongings in the front for easy access.
When I returned a few days later, I discovered the unit had been robbed.
My new Mac computer was gone, a brand new microphone (a wonderful gift from my brother), my jewelry, eyeglasses, my best clothes and shoes, luxury toiletries bought for my 'sisters' for Xmas gifts, my office files -- and most importantly, my class plans as a teacher (35 years' worth) and legal documents, including papers I had amassed over several YEARS that I need in order to apply for British citizenship...Sigh...Just about everything I had left in the world that is important to me...gone.
I would really like to replace the basics from this disaster but can't buy ANYTHING in my current circumstances without help. In short: I am a retirement-aged woman who is already living "rough", month-to-month, who has been seriously set-back in the past 4 years by not one, but TWO criminals -- and a medical system that is quite inhumane.
