Access to timely, quality information is the glue that binds a community together. Concerned about the “information desert” that resulted when the last local newspaper stopped publishing in our area, a small band of local volunteers founded the Stockbridge Community News. Since 2016, this small-town Michigan nonprofit newspaper has provided up-to-date local news, human interest, and educational stories to our local readers.
Every month SCN distributes a free print edition to roughly 9,000 households across multiple communities comprising the Stockbridge area school district. Throughout the month, on our SCN website, stories are posted as they become available. We regularly receive positive feedback from the community, and our content has even been nationally recognized, annually, by the National Federation of Press Women.
During the past nine years, this small, volunteer-driven community newspaper has delivered thousands of pages of print and online news to residents of the local community. For many, we are the only print news they receive and their only online source of focused, local information.
Since our inception, we have relied on generous donors and amazing local businesses who regularly support us with their sponsored advertising. But with the continuing increases to postage, paper, and website hosting and maintenance costs, our income has not continued to keep pace with our expenses. In other words—we need help, beyond what an increase to ad prices can deliver.
As a member of our community—and even those outside our community—if you appreciate the value of a local, hometown newspaper, we urge you to chip in what you can to keep the Stockbridge Community News alive and flourishing. Whether it's $1, $5, or $5,000, your support is greatly appreciated by the Stockbridge Community News and the people we serve—our readers!
