Distance running has taught me many life lessons. It has also taught me that we can accomplish incredible things with commitment and perseverance.
On October 25, 2015 I am returning to Washington DC to run in the Marine Corps Marathon. This will be just my second full marathon (26.2 miles)!
I would like to share the joy of being committed to great goals and accomplishing them with all of you. Many runners team up with charities to raise money and awareness through marathon running. I am asking for you to join me in supporting the small church community of my youth.
The mission church of St. Kateri sits on the Bay Mills Indian Reservation in rural northern Michigan. My father, a full-blooded Chippewa, spent a lifetime worshipping in this church. He brought me here as a young boy to make my First Communion.
Helping as an altar server gave me great sense of pride and helped connect me with my Catholic faith.
My favorite duty was ringing the large bell above the vestibule before Mass. Pulling on that rope and hearing the bell begin to clang is still a vivid memory for me.
As a priest I travel home to St. Kateri's when I can and am honored to celebrate Mass. Last year I noticed that the rope was gone. I was told the bell was in bad shape and could not be rung any more for fear of it damaging the roof.
I resolved then to save the bell!
Over the winter the needs of this small church (less than 50 families) became severe. The bell tower is close to collapsing, the roof needs replacing, and now both heaters in the church have failed.
Together we can bring significant hope and relief to a community that has given so much to me!
