Stevie's Top Surgery Fund

20% of funds will go to TransFolk of WA*

Hi, my name is Stevie. I am 28 years old and grew up in country WA. I play guitar, and enjoy film, photography and creative writing. I'm a big Dockers fan and a Harry Potter fanatic. I'm passionate about LGBTIQ+ rights and mental health. I also happen to be transgender and non-binary.

I identify as transgender because I don't identify with the sex I was assigned at birth. I identify as non-binary because I don't identify as a man or woman, but somewhere outside of this.  After experiencing gender dysphoria for as long as I can remember, and actively questioning my gender for most of my adult life, I am finally at a point where I can openly and confidently identify and live as my true self.

Gender dysphoria is a difficult beast to tame. For those who don't know what gender dysphoria is, it's the distress or unhappiness someone may experience if their gender does not match the sex they were assigned at birth.  What this looks like for me? Feeling distressed just leaving the house a lot of the time, knowing I'll constantly be misgendered by being addressed as she, called a women, categorised as "one of the girls". It might not sound like a big deal, but it's exhausting and incredibly upsetting, on an ongoing basis (think death of a thousand cuts).

That's why it's so important for me to get top surgery. I don't want to be constantly read as and assumed to be female. My chest plays a big part in this.  And so, after two years  of  GP, psychiatrist and endocrinology appointments, and months of waiting in between, I'm finally in the right physical and mental head space to get top surgery! I went for my consultation recently, and it looks like I'll have a Feb or March 2020 date at this point.

I'm very privileged to have part time employment, and have been paying for private health insurance for the past 12+ months to make sure I can get my hospital fees covered. Unfortunately though,  after the last couple of years of paying for all of the above, and medication for my mental health, I haven't had much opportunity to save money.

Even with health insurance, and Medicare rebates, I'll still be between $5k-$6k out of pocket. I obviously don't expect all of this to be raised through fundraising (I'm fanatically saving as much as I can right now to get the funds). But I want to take this opportunity to connect with friends, family and community to get some money to put towards it.

I'll be getting some LGBTIQ+ flag stickers printed soon and will be giving out for any donations made. If you specifically want to buy them in exchange for cash, they are $3 each or 4 for $10 (plus postage if I have to send to you). If you want to make a donation higher than this, then just make the donation and let me know which ones you want.

I'm also planning to hold a little morning tea early next year, so watch this space!

Thank you for reading and for supporting me :)
