Motor Neuron Disease (MND) describes a group of diseases that affect nerve cells that normally carry messages from the brain to the muscles via the spinal cord. Every day two people are diagnosed with MND in Australia and two people die from the disease. With MND the nerves become damaged and start to die so muscles gradually get weaker and waste away. Currently, there is no cure for MND and it is life shortening.
Air Vice Marshal Stephen Edgeley, a friend, mentor and colleague, is suffering from this affliction. With the support of his wife Pippa, he is fighting this disease, quietly, with dignity, but Steve’s plight also serves to help spread awareness of MND and the needs of those fighting this disease.
Steve and Pippa also have the love and support of the RAAF Air Traffic Control Family, as well as the larger Air Force. Last year we had a brilliant ATC and AF turn out at a fund raising walk in Canberra, which combined with Teresa Wynter’s fantastic efforts in the UK, raised vital funds for MND research.
Many of you know that I walk regularly, usually a minimum of ten km a day. Given the success of last years March On and MND fundraiser walks I have decided to see if this year my walks can raise awareness of health issues directly affecting my family, friends and colleagues.
To that end I have set up the first of a couple of GoFundMe pages for charities that can directly affect people close to me. The first one of these carries on from the success of last year’s walk for MND and the fantastic effort put in by Teresa.
Please join me in supporting Steve and Pippa, as well as other people affected by this disease.
