Steve's Hope – A Path to Regaining Mobility and Independence
Two years ago, Steve’s life took an unexpected and challenging turn. Diagnosed with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease, a rare and progressive neurological condition, Steve’s world has become a daily battle against the relentless advance of peripheral neuropathy. The disease has rapidly deteriorated his ability to move, and he now depends on a wheelchair and full-time assistance to navigate even the simplest tasks. What once seemed like a future full of possibilities has become a reality defined by limitations.
As his hands and feet lose their ability to feel and move, Steve finds himself at a crossroads. He now faces a life that could soon be entirely immobile, isolated in his wheelchair and reliant on others for every aspect of daily life. Without the proper interventions and assistance, he will lose the ability to live independently, and muscle wasting will gradually rob him of even more strength. The path ahead is clear: Steve either finds a way to regain some mobility and restore his independence, or he will be bound to a life of dependency and physical decline.
The Challenge: A Home and Life That Needs to Adapt
Steve’s current situation is not only about losing mobility; it’s about the struggle to adapt his life to his new circumstances. His home, once a place of comfort, now presents daily obstacles. Without accessibility modifications, Steve cannot fully navigate his own house. The kitchen, bathroom, and other essential areas need to be restructured to accommodate his wheelchair. Immediate needs include:
• A wheelchair van to safely get in and out of the car. He has had several very scary near falls when trying to transfer into a vehicle.
• Standup electric wheelchair for improved circulation and breathing capacity, increased bone density and the ability to bear weight, reduced spasm occurrences, pressure relief on butt/thighs and reduced pressure sores, and the ability to live at his once normal height.
• All-terrain adventure tank wheelchair to traverse snow, grass, and other challenging terrain.
• A new driveway designed to allow smooth and safe wheelchair access.
• A bidet toilet and handicap-accessible shower to promote dignity and ease of care.
• A “Super Handy” floor lift to help in case of falls.
• A Hoyer Deluxe power patient lift to assist with movement and transfers.
These adjustments are not luxuries—they are safety and accessibility essentials that will help Steve regain a sense of normalcy and maintain his dignity. They will help him move through life, if not as he once did, then at least with more freedom and independence.
