Steve Pikes has been my water delivery driver and neighbor since I moved into this community just four months ago, and in that short time he has shown nothing but kindness, reliability, and generosity to everyone around him. On January 15, around 4:00 to 4:15 p.m., Steve was driving his water truck down a steep road off Sierra Highway in the Santa Clarita and Agua Dulce area when his brakes suddenly failed, causing the truck to speed uncontrollably down the hill and across the highway. Carrying a full, heavy tank of water, the truck was completely destroyed in the crash, and Steve was airlifted to the hospital, where he remains today. Due to the severity of his injuries, Steve is now undergoing surgery and will have to lose his leg as a result of the accident, leaving him facing a long, painful, and life-changing recovery. This tragedy has completely turned Steve and his wife Patty’s lives upside down, as they are now facing overwhelming medical bills, the loss of his truck, and the loss of their primary source of income. In addition, Patty requires ongoing care of her own, which adds to the challenges their household is facing during this already difficult time. Steve is an older man who will need extensive time, care, rehabilitation, and support to heal and adapt, and the financial strain only adds to the weight of an already heavy situation. Steve has always gone above and beyond for his customers and neighbors, continuing to deliver water even when his truck was barely holding together because people depended on him, and he never hesitated to put others first. Now, he is the one who needs help. Any contribution, big or small, will go directly toward Steve’s medical expenses, surgery and recovery costs, rehabilitation, and basic living expenses for Steve and Patty during this incredibly difficult time, and with enough support, we can also work toward repairing or replacing his truck so he can one day return to the work and community he loves.
