On Sunday, November 14, 2021, one of my employees, Richard Stevens, was at home by himself when a utility issue caused a natural gas explosion in his home in the South Columbus area. Richard was fortunate enough to be in the farthest point of the home from the ignition point, likely the only thing sparing his life. He suffered severe burns to his hands, arms, and face. Since being in the hospital with second degree burns he has undergone surgery for his facial burns, which were increased to third degree burns. It is expected that Richard will remain in the hospital burn unit until almost Christmas.
Richard is a very valuable employee and a model of determination and character. In the past two years he has successfully battled cancer and kept a smile on his face along the way. He is truly an inspiration to all of us.
Fortunately, Richard's wife was not home at the time of the accident. She is able to care for him while he is in the hospital alongside the surgeons and staff. As you can see from the images on the below ABC 6 story, the house is a complete loss. While they do have home insurance; they will be stuck finding suitable housing once Richard is released from the hospital's care.
Given the current housing climate in this city, that will undoubtedly be a challenge. Please join me in pledging anything that you can to assist this family in a tremendous time of need. It goes without saying that no time is easy for this type of incident to occur but the holidays are of course the worst time to be struggling.
In addition to donations the family is asking for assistance on leads for rental properties in South Columbus area so that they are able to remain close to family that will be assisting Richard's wife with post-hospital care moving forward.
