At Yuba City High School, a school in a  small town in Northern California, our mascot is a Honker. A fighting, majestic, and sometimes terrifying, feathered animal. When I first came to be a teacher at YCHS, I scoffed at the fact that this was our mascot. However, I have come to truly respect this bird and what it represents. They can actually teach us a lot: Geese fly further together, support each other when times are tough, take turns leading, cheer on progress and encourage each other, and are instinctually loyal.

Although he would have laughed at this comparison - Steven Bush encapsulated what it meant to be a Honker, and he has taught all of us so much. 

Steven Alan Bush was an English and AVID teacher at Yuba City High School. He was only 33 years old when he lost his brief but courageous and hard-fought battle with cancer. Steven loved being a teacher and truly wanted to make a difference in his student's lives. In the words of his own loving parents, "Steven was a man of integrity and honor. He was honest, caring, and just wanted to make the world a little bit better. When he was a child he expressed his wish to, “One day, give someone who is down on their luck a second chance at life.” 

The English Department at Yuba City High School, with the support of many others, want to extend Steven's legacy by doing just what Steven truly wanted to do: Give someone a chance. 

With this fundraiser, we  would like to help his memory and legacy  live on by continuing to assist his students through a memorial scholarship. All money collected will be awarded in the form of scholarships to Steven's AVID students, graduating in 2022.

We all miss Steven and know that we cannot see him again in this life. However, with your help, his legacy and lifelong quest of making the world a little better can continue on through this memorial scholarship.
