We are a family that prays and believes in the power of prayer. We covet your prayers through Steve's health journey.
Many have asked how they can be helping during this time.
First and foremost, we need your prayers. We trust God no matter what happens. Please be praying for wisdom for the doctors, effectiveness of treatment (And, we do believe God can heal Steve either through a miracle or medicine, but even if he doesn't in this life, we know Jesus has conquered death), strength and perseverance for Steve and his loved ones, and peace to accept what is to come.
Second, financially/in person. Steve will be off work for a while. It is yet to be determined as to the length, but we will keep you updated. As of now, Steve is using his paid leave and sick bank hours to continue to draw a paycheck. However, with less than 6 weeks left (as of March 2nd, 2019) of these hours, bills will start to come in without the ability to be paid. Right now, we have set the campaign for $20,000 to help Steven and Bonnie as they adjust to their new normal. We really don’t know what the right financial goal should be, but with so many asking, we decided to start here and to take it each day at a time. Anything helps whether a donation through GoFundMe, a meal (Monticello Christian Church has started to help in this way, and we are thankful!), helping with household chores and/or yard work, dropping a check or cash by the house to cover bills, insurance premiums, or debt repayment, transportation to/from doctor's appointment, grocery shopping, gas cards, etc. A couple needs we have thought of while at the hospital are a bedside commode, a moveable bedside table, a shower chair, and possibly a hospital bed. Bonnie plans to check with the VA about the possibility of borrowing these items. Or, if you know of anyone who has one to borrow, that’d be great too! Another way we could use help is with volunteers to stop in at the house to check in on dad throughout the day while Bonnie is at work. We have yet to see what the bills for treatment will be, but medical costs are always a thing as well. We plan to keep you updated on here, on Facebook, through texts/calls, and conversations. Here is Steve's medical journey thus far:
It has been since about October 2018 that Steve has been fighting different health issues. A trip to the Emergency Room and a chest CT scan at the end of February 2019 revealed a tumor on his left kidney (8cm x 10cm). Steve had another CT scan done on March 1st, which revealed nodules in the lungs and swollen lymph nodes. At this point, it was looking like cancer, and Steve met with an oncologist, Dr. Patel, on March 5th. Dr. Patel explained that Steve had cancer in the kidney, the lungs, and the lymph nodes. Overall, Steve has at least 20-30 spots of cancer in his lungs and also on multiple lymph nodes around his kidney and lungs. At this time, Dr. Patel has ordered more tests to determine where the cancer originated. Dr. Patel expressed that his suspicion is kidney cancer because of the tumor that is on the kidney. Steve had a biopsy done on March 12th at 7:15 am (we will find out results tomorrow the 18th). They took the biopsy from a cancer spot that is in the lung. If the biopsy shows kidney cells in the lung, then that will show that the cancer originated from the kidney. Steve also had a PET scan on March 15th at 11 am (we will find out results tomorrow the 18th as well). The scan was of the entire body to see if the cancer has spread anywhere else. Since Friday the 15th, Steve has been in the hospital due to a collapsed lung. We expect he will be discharged sometime tomorrow, March 18th. At this time, surgery to remove the kidney would not do anything, so Steve will not be having that surgery. If it is determined to be kidney cancer after the biopsy, the most likely course of treatment will be immunotherapy.
Again, we covet your prayers and trust in God that whether through healing or not, HE will be glorified. Our prayer is that more would know of His faithfulness through this hard time. We believe that death does not have the last word. It doesn't now, and it never will.
