Hi, I am Sandy Forshey. My brother-in-law, Steve Polly, was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer two years ago. After his stem cell transplant, he had a massive head injury in the hospital due to a fall. Steve had to have emergency surgery to release the pressure from his brain swelling. The doctors had to remove the left side of his skull, and in this process, he suffered a stroke. He has had multiple issues with his immune system due to chemo treatment. Steve finally had his flap replaced, and all went great. About six weeks after, the hardware from the flap began eroding his skull, causing an infection. Steve had to have the flap removed, and any progress in therapy he had just left.

Steve was doing very well once the infection cleared up, but now his brain is being pushed to the right side of his skull. His doctor in Columbia thought once he saw the scans of Steve's head that he would come in and find him in a coma. Steve will be going to Vanderbilt to have another surgery to open up his head and let the scalp stretch, allowing his brain to recenter. Then in 8 weeks he will have another flap inserted and hopefully this one will work.

His wife had a stroke in February, and she is still recovering herself.
