We recently lost our fearless leader, Mr. Steve Newman. He was instrumental (sorry) in creating a vibrant jazz scene in Santa Cruz county.
Steve, along with a handful of us board members, started the jam sessions at the Java House, now the Pono Grill, 14 years ago. After it changed hands we moved the jam to Bocci’s Cellar where it continued until recently.
I can't remember him missing a Sunday afternoon at the jam. Steve also hosted a jazz improv class for people just getting into jazz improvisation for over a decade.
I can't think of a better way to immortalize him other than establishing a scholarship in his name. The scholarship will be awarded to a local jazz musician yearly at the Santa Cruz Jazz Festival every March at Cabrillo College. It will be a cash award to be used to further the education of a local high school student. The student will be picked by the judges at the SC Jazz Fest .
There are two ways to donate. There will be a Gofundme account if you need to use a credit card, or better yet you can mail a check to SCJF (Santa Cruz Jazz Festival) at PO Box 7089 Santa Cruz, CA 95061-7089.
Either way I can supply you with a tax-deductible receipt just in time to get it into 2019!
Any amount is welcome.
Contact me with any questions at [email redacted].
I miss my friend of many years,
Steve Gray
