Helping Steves on going Fight of a Debilitating 4-Month Battle with Reactivated Epstein-Barr Virus

For the past four months, Steve has been fighting a severe and life-altering illness that has now left him unable to work, drive, or manage even the most basic daily tasks.

It began in early December with a persistent sore throat and chesty cough that didn’t respond to two courses of antibiotics. Blood tests in December confirmed he had reactivated Epstein-Barr Virus (commonly known as Glandular Fever). Although he had a mild case as a teenager, as the weeks rolled on into months it was becoming clear it was more and this reactivation has hit him much harder.

What started as a sore throat quickly developed into severe chronic fatigue and widespread muscle and joint pains. The fatigue is relentless — a heavy, exhausting fog that forces him to sleep 12 to 16 hours a day, with additional naps, yet he still feels drained. Simple activities like showering, getting dressed, or standing for more than a few minutes can push him to the point of collapse. He can now barely walk 100–300 metres without his body giving out.

The pain affects nearly every major joint: shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands, lower back, knees, ankles, and feet. His hands have become swollen and claw-like, with his right hand almost completely useless. He struggles to raise his arms above shoulder height, and even lifting his legs has become difficult. At times the pain reaches 8 out of 10 for Steve thats a 20 for most of us, with strong painkillers (Panadeine Forte) only taking the edge off.

Over the past four months, Steve has gone from being a healthy, active father to someone largely confined to the couch. He now walks hunched over, has lost over 7kg, and requires help from his partner Georgie with basic tasks such as cutting up his food and getting dressed. The demoralising loss of independence has been incredibly tough — he has even asked close friends and family to limit visits because he doesn’t want anyone seeing him in this condition.

Extensive medical testing has thankfully ruled out serious conditions like Rheumatoid Arthritis and other major autoimmune diseases, as well as anything more sinister. However, because Epstein-Barr is a viral infection, there is no specific medication or quick cure. Recovery relies on rest, hydration, and time — but instead of improving, his symptoms have steadily worsened over recent months.

Now more than four months into this battle, Steve is still unable to return to work. He cannot drive safely, hold a pen for long, or pass the medical and drug tests required for his job. The ongoing lack of income has created significant financial pressure for him and his family as they try to cover bills and living expenses while he focuses on recovery.

Any support — whether financial, sharing this page, or kind words — will help ease the burden during this incredibly challenging time and allow Steve to focus fully on resting and healing.

Thank you for taking the time to read his story and for any help you can offer.
