As many of you already know, on the morning of August 15, 2022, our beloved Steve Daluz entered the hospital in critical condition. We are still unsure of what happened to cause Steve’s body to go haywire, but it could have been caused by him being sick from food poisoning. Upon arrival at the hospital, he had suffered a stroke, cardiac arrest, was in diabetic keto acidosis, his blood sugar levels were fatally elevated, his liver and kidneys were not functioning properly and when they intubated him, his oxygen saturation would not rise above 80%. His wife, Lori, received a phone call from his nurse late that same night, who instructed her to get the family back to the hospital to see Steve because he was not responding to the ventilator and they did not think he would make it through the night. We had everyone we could reach praying immediately. Lori and David rushed to the hospital, only to find a miracle; their husband and father was lying on his stomach, in a medical coma, but finally for the first time that day, he was stable. The family was warned that he was on life support and they had no idea if he would improve. Steve spent 10 days on life support, but was getting a little stronger every day. On August 25, Steve was finally able to breath on his own and he was successfully taken off the ventilator. That was an exciting day, but was followed by some devastating news the next morning. Steve announced that he could not see and after an MRI scan, the neurologist announced that the optical nerves had died and he would be permanently blind. The doctors said this is a rare condition and weren’t sure how this happened, but that it was probably from lack of oxygen during the 3 minutes he had flatlined and/or from that first day his oxygen saturation never rose above 80%. In any event, Steve’s successful extubation was the second miracle his family witnessed. Steve continued to improve every day and on September 2, 2022, he was transferred to a rehabilitation center. They believe he should be there 2-3 weeks before he is strong enough to get around on his own and then can return home and be driven to therapy appointments daily. The DaLuz family has a hard road ahead. Lori will need a Visual impairment expert to go through their home & assess what modifications will be needed for Steve. This expert advice, changes to the home, and home care for Steve will be costly. Because of the love of all their friends and family, who have asked how they can help, we are setting up a Go Fund Me page to help Steve and Lori pay for all these expenses. The family is grateful for all the prayers and support they have already received. God is good and faithful and has been there to get this family through a crisis. Of course we will continue to pray for a miracle that Steve will regain his sight, but we are also praying that if he remains blind, Steve will be able to find his purpose and live out the calling God has on his life. The family thanks you for all your prayers and support. God bless you all!
