From Jeff Boucek-
The Cashmer family were long-time residents of Edgewood living on LaCrosse St. The children (Beverly, Debbie, Monica, and Steve) all attended Edgewood and were graduates of EHS starting in 1969 with Bev and ending in 1980 when Steve, the youngest, graduated.
When I first heard of Steve’s passing on Friday, I was stunned by it…much too young, much too sudden, etc. I sat in the car telling my wife about it all the while remembering a guy from a wonderful family who was a good athlete (playing both basketball and tennis for EHS), a good friend to many and a good person all the way around. He loved life, family, and friends…traits he carried into adulthood and were reflected in his daily life.
While I have not seen Steve in many years, one of the good things about social media is it does allow for us to stay connected to people and everything I saw about Steve over the years reflected the same person I remembered back in the late 1970’s.
Every one of these notes impacts me in different ways and each loss we experience chips away at our youth and our time together in a place we all once called ‘home”. When quietly reflecting on the passing of someone from Edgewood I am often taken back in my mind to a much simpler time. The things that seemed so important in our youth, now seem less important as I reflect now as an adult. But the love I have for that time of my life and for each one of you remains forever strong.
Perhaps it’s the time we are now in, the passing of so many of us combined with age, but as I pen this note about the loss of Steve and pray for him, his family and his friends, that voice inside my head quietly reminds me (as it has so many times) of how fortunate I was to grow up in that small borough with all of you and how fragile life is.
Steve is without question one of those people I was fortunate to grow up with and his sudden passing is a poignant reminder of how truly fragile life is. None of us know how many days we have here on earth…but for each new day we have, be ever so grateful.
The world lost a good man. We lost a husband, father, brother, uncle, friend/classmate and yet again, another part of our youth. He will be missed by many.
I have no doubt that Heaven has a new angel, and he is enjoying being reunited with his parents, his sister Beverly and so many from that small borough outside of Pittsburgh that we once called “home”.
Please keep the entire Cashmer family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
