Na een lange en intensieve zoektocht, en met veel twijfel, heb ik besloten om ons verhaal te delen over mijn dochter Laura.

Wat ooit een zelfstandig en veelbelovend jong leven was — gevuld met universitaire studies en sport — veranderde in 2018 abrupt door een ongeval en een opeenstapeling van tegenslag. Intussen leven we al acht jaar in een nachtmerrie van ongevallen, complicaties en zware operaties. Vandaag is mijn dochter, inmiddels 30 jaar, volledig afhankelijk en kan ze zelfs niet meer stappen.

Na vier operaties in België werd duidelijk dat haar situatie te complex was en werd ze doorverwezen naar het buitenland. Begin vorig jaar onderging ze daar een vijfde, zeer complexe en langdurige operatie, mede dankzij de steun van vele mensen. Ondanks opnieuw een zwaar revalidatietraject, aanhoudende pijn en een enorme inzet, kregen we recent het harde nieuws dat een zesde operatie noodzakelijk is. Deze ingreep is cruciaal om niet alleen haar enkelgewricht, maar zelfs haar volledige onderbeen te kunnen redden. De operatie zal plaatsvinden in Zwitserland.

Na jaren van lijden, herhaalde operaties, intense pijn waarvoor ze dagelijks zware pijnmedicatie moet nemen, het verlies van haar mobiliteit en haar leven zoals ze dat kende, komt dit nieuws bijzonder hard aan. Omdat de medische kosten in dit langdurige traject enorm oplopen en er opnieuw een zware zesde operatie met een lange intensieve revalidatie aankomt, willen we graag een warme oproep doen. Elke vorm van steun kan een groot verschil maken.

Mijn dochter heeft altijd op hoog niveau gesport, in combinatie met universitaire studies. Haar leven werd gekenmerkt door discipline en doorzettingsvermogen, wat resulteerde in twee universitaire diploma’s, een postgraduaat en mooie sportprestaties op zowel nationaal als internationaal niveau.

Op haar 23ste liep ze een sporttrauma op aan haar rechtervoet en werd met spoed geopereerd. Helaas verliep deze operatie fout. Na een revalidatie van een jaar kon ze nog steeds niet stappen en bleef de pijn ondraaglijk. Na consultatie bij een andere specialist werd vastgesteld dat er een medische fout was gebeurd en dat een nieuwe operatie noodzakelijk was. Twee onafhankelijke artsen bevestigden dit.

Wat volgde was een hersteloperatie, waarna al snel een derde en vierde operatie nodig bleken. Na de derde operatie kreeg ze bovendien te maken met Sudeck/CRPS. Het werd een bijzonder zware periode. Door COVID-19 moesten operaties worden uitgesteld, maar ze bleef moedig volhouden.

Een week voor de geplande vierde operatie sloeg het noodlot opnieuw toe: ze viel en liep een ernstig trauma op aan hetzelfde been. Hierdoor werd de geplande ingreep een uiterst complexe hersteloperatie. Na een lange revalidatie en een zoektocht naar hulp die bijna vier jaar duurde, bleef haar situatie alleen maar verslechteren. Uiteindelijk werden zelfs doorverwezen en dus genoodzaakt om hulp te zoeken in het buitenland.

In 2025 onderging ze daar haar vijfde operatie, dankzij de steun van vele mensen. Na een lang revalidatietraject waarbij ze nog steeds niet kan stappen en veel pijn heeft, kregen we het harde verdict dat een zesde operatie onvermijdelijk is. Door de complexiteit ervan is behandeling in België niet mogelijk en zal de ingreep plaatsvinden in Zwitserland.

Aangezien geen enkele (medische) instantie in België deze buitenlandse behandeling terugbetaalt, hopen we op uw steun. Zodat mijn dochter eindelijk de zorg kan krijgen die ze nodig heeft, haar leven stap voor stap opnieuw kan opbouwen en er — na al die jaren — misschien eindelijk een klein lichtpuntje mag komen.

After a long and intensive search, and with much hesitation, I have decided to share our story about my daughter Laura.

What was once an independent and promising young life — filled with university studies and sports — changed abruptly in 2018 due to an accident and a series of setbacks. We have now been living in a nightmare of accidents, complications and serious operations for eight years. Today, my daughter, now 30 years old, is completely dependent and can no longer even walk.

After four operations in Belgium, it became clear that her situation was too complex and she was referred abroad. At the beginning of last year, she underwent a fifth, very complex and lengthy operation there, thanks in part to the support of many people. Despite another difficult rehabilitation process, persistent pain and enormous effort, we recently received the difficult news that a sixth operation is necessary. This procedure is crucial to save not only her ankle joint, but her entire lower leg. The operation will take place in Switzerland.

After years of suffering, repeated operations, intense pain, the loss of her mobility and her life as she knew it, this news is particularly hard to take. You can read the full story below, but this is yet another serious setback with far-reaching consequences.

Because the medical costs in this long-term process are enormous and this sixth operation with a long intensive rehabilitation is coming up, we would like to make a heartfelt appeal. Any form of support can make a big difference.

My daughter has always been a high-level athlete, while also pursuing her university studies. Her life was characterised by discipline and perseverance, which resulted in two university degrees, a postgraduate degree and impressive sporting achievements at both national and international level.

At the age of 23, she suffered a sports injury to her right foot and underwent emergency surgery. Unfortunately, this operation went wrong. After a year of rehabilitation, she was still unable to walk and the pain remained unbearable. After consulting another specialist, it was determined that a medical error had been made and that a new operation was necessary. Two independent doctors confirmed this.

What followed was corrective surgery, after which a third and fourth operation soon proved necessary. After the third operation, she also developed Sudeck/CRPS. It was an extremely difficult period. Due to COVID-19, operations had to be postponed, but she persevered courageously.

A week before her fourth scheduled operation, misfortune struck again: she fell and suffered severe trauma to the same leg. This turned the planned procedure into an extremely complex reconstructive operation. After a long rehabilitation and a search for help that lasted almost four years, her situation only continued to be worsened. Eventually, she was even referred and forced to seek help abroad.

In 2025, she underwent her fifth operation there, thanks to the support of many people. After a long rehabilitation process, during which she still cannot walk and is in a lot of pain, we received the hard news that a sixth operation cannot be avoided. Due to its complexity, treatment in Belgium is not possible and the operation will take place in Switzerland.

Since no (medical) authority in Belgium will reimburse this treatment abroad, we are hoping for your support. So that my daughter can finally get the care she needs, rebuild her life step by step and — after all these years — perhaps finally see a glimmer of hope.

Ce qui était autrefois une jeune vie indépendante et prometteuse — remplie d'études universitaires et de sport — a basculé brutalement en 2018 à la suite d'un accident et d'une succession de coups du sort. Depuis, cela fait déjà huit ans que nous vivons un cauchemar fait d'accidents, de complications et d'opérations lourdes. Aujourd'hui, ma fille, qui a désormais 30 ans, est totalement dépendante et ne peut même plus marcher.

Après quatre opérations en Belgique, elle est apparue clairement que son cas était trop complexe et elle a été orientée vers l'étranger. Au début de l'année dernière, elle y a subi une cinquième opération, très complexe et de longue durée, notamment grâce au soutien de nombreuses personnes. Malgré un nouveau parcours de rééducation difficile, des douleurs persistantes et un engagement sans faille, nous avons récemment appris la triste nouvelle qu'une sixième opération était nécessaire. Cette intervention est cruciale pour sauver non seulement son articulation de la cheville, mais aussi l'ensemble de sa jambe. L'opération aura lieu en Suisse.

Après des années de souffrances, d'opérations à répétition, de douleurs intenses qui l'obligent à prendre quotidiennement des analgésiques puissants, la perte de sa mobilité et de la vie telle qu'elle la connaissait, cette nouvelle est particulièrement difficile à accepter. À l'âge de 23 ans, elle a subi un traumatisme sportif au pied droit et a été opérée en urgence. Malheureusement, cette opération s'est mal déroulée. Après une année de rééducation, elle ne pouvait toujours pas marcher et la douleur restait insupportable. Après consultation d'un autre spécialiste, il a été établi qu'une erreur médicale avait été commise et qu'une nouvelle opération était nécessaire. Deux médecins indépendants l'ont confirmé.

Elle a ensuite subi une opération de reconstruction, qui a rapidement été suivie d'une troisième et d'une quatrième intervention. Après la troisième opération, elle a en outre développé un syndrome de Sudeck/CRPS. Ce fut une période particulièrement difficile. En raison de la COVID-19, les opérations ont dû être reportées, mais elle a continué à faire preuve de courage.

Une semaine avant la quatrième opération prévue, le malheur a de nouveau frappé : elle a fait une chute et s'est gravement blessée à la même jambe. L'intervention prévue s'est alors transformée en une opération de reconstruction extrêmement complexe. Après une longue rééducation et une quête d'aide qui a duré près de quatre ans, son état n'a cessé de s'aggraver. Finalement, elle a même été orientée vers l'étranger et a donc été contrainte de chercher de l'aide à l'étranger.

En 2025, elle y a subi sa cinquième opération, grâce au soutien de nombreuses personnes. Après un long parcours de rééducation au cours duquel elle ne parvient toujours pas à marcher et souffre beaucoup, nous avons reçu le verdict sans appel : une sixième opération est inévitable. En raison de sa complexité, ce traitement n'est pas possible en Belgique et l'intervention aura lieu en Suisse.

Étant donné qu'aucun organisme (médical) en Belgique ne rembourse ce traitement à l'étranger, nous comptons sur votre soutien.
