Introduction to Our Family

We are Johan and Karen, a hardworking couple who have been self-employed together for many years. We work a lot — often long days — and we do it with love. Despite the challenges of recent years, we keep doing our best, although we must honestly admit that at the end of a hard working month it has become more a matter of luck if there is anything left financially.

Our dachshund Flugel, 9 years old, has been the heart of our family all this time. He is always with us:

he comes with us to our clients,

he sleeps in bed with us in the evening,

and in reality he is by our side 24/7.

For us he is not just a pet, but a true family member who shares every day of our lives. His presence brings calm, joy, and structure to our lives. Anyone who knows us knows that the three of us are inseparable.

The Diagnosis

Recently we received news that completely stopped our world:

Flugel has cancer (Type B).

Fortunately, it is a form with a good chance of success, provided that he completes the full chemotherapy treatment. So far he has responded well to the therapy, which gives us hope and shows his strong will to fight.

The Treatment Plan

Flugel needs a total of 16 chemotherapy treatments.

So far, we have completed 3 treatments.

The schedule looks like this:

4 weeks: chemotherapy every week

1 week break

again 4 weeks of chemotherapy

1 week break

followed by the final 3 treatments

Each session costs between €680 and €800, excluding medication, blood tests, and consultations. As a result, the total costs quickly rise far beyond what we can currently carry on our own.

Why We Are Asking for Help

Flugel has been part of every aspect of our lives for almost ten years.

He comes with us to work, sleeps beside us, travels with us — he is our family.

We want to give him at least six more beautiful years, and hopefully even more. He deserves that chance.

Although as self-employed people we are used to solving our problems ourselves, this situation forces us to ask for help. The financial burden of this long and intensive treatment is currently too heavy for us to manage alone.

Introductie van ons gezin

Wij zijn Johan en Karen, een hardwerkend koppel dat al jaren samen zelfstandig is. We werken veel — vaak lange dagen — maar we doen het met liefde. Ondanks de uitdagingen van de laatste jaren blijven we ons best doen, al moeten we eerlijk zeggen dat er aan het einde van een harde werkmaand tegenwoordig eerder sprake is van geluk als er nog iets overblijft.

Onze teckel Flugel, 9 jaar oud, is al die tijd het hart van ons gezin geweest. Hij is altijd bij ons:

hij gaat mee naar onze klanten,

hij is ’s avonds bij ons in bed,

en eigenlijk is hij 24/7 aan onze zijde.

Voor ons is hij geen huisdier, maar een volwaardig gezinslid dat elke dag mee vormt. Zijn aanwezigheid geeft rust, plezier en structuur aan ons leven. Wie ons kent, weet dat wij drie onafscheidelijk zijn.

De diagnose

Onlangs kregen we het nieuws dat onze wereld stilzette:

Flugel heeft kanker (type B).

Het is gelukkig een vorm met een goede slaagkans, op voorwaarde dat hij een volledig chemotraject volgt. Tot nu toe reageert hij goed op de behandeling, wat ons hoop geeft en zijn vechtlust bevestigt.

Het behandeltraject

Flugel moet in totaal 16 chemobehandelingen ondergaan.

We hebben er nu 3 achter de rug.

Het schema bestaat uit:

4 weken: elke week chemo

1 week pauze

opnieuw 4 weken chemo

1 week pauze

daarna de laatste 3 behandelingen

Elke sessie kost tussen €680 en €800, exclusief medicatie, bloedonderzoek en consultaties. De totale kosten lopen daardoor snel op, ver boven wat we momenteel alleen kunnen dragen.

Waarom we hulp vragen

Flugel maakt al bijna tien jaar deel uit van elk aspect van ons leven.

Hij gaat mee naar het werk, hij slaapt bij ons, hij reist met ons — hij ís ons gezin.

Wij willen hem nog minstens zes mooie jaren geven, en met wat geluk nog meer. Hij verdient die kans.

Hoewel we als zelfstandigen gewend zijn om onze problemen zelf op te lossen, dwingt deze situatie ons om hulp te vragen. De financiële last van dit langdurige en intensieve traject is voor ons op dit moment te zwaar.

opvolgingsconsultaties bij de oncoloog

Om iedereen die ons steunt op de hoogte te houden, zullen wij elke week een update plaatsen over Flugel zijn behandeling, zijn gezondheidstoestand en de vooruitgang die hij maakt. Transparantie en dankbaarheid staan voorop.
