Steph's second cancer journey

Donation protected

Dear Family and Friends,

I wanted to update you on my twin sister, Steph, and her current battle with cancer. As many of you know, I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021, following Steph’s earlier diagnosis and our mother’s struggle with the disease. Steph and I were originally diagnosed with BRCA1 gene mutation at age 26, after mum's diagnosis. Additionally, a year before my diagnosis, our oldest sister faced cervical cancer. Although her cancer wasn’t linked to the BRCA1 gene, our family has a strong history of aggressive cancers like ovarian and breast cancer due to this mutation.

Currently, I’m 19 weeks pregnant, and Steph is 13 weeks along. During her 6-week ultrasound, a mass was discovered on Steph’s left ovary. She had surgery to remove the ovary and fallopian tube, leading to complications and a two-week hospital stay. Despite these risks, Steph and her baby are both fighting strong. The results confirmed the mass was high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC), a fast-growing type of ovarian cancer, often associated to BRCA1 gene mutations.

Steph has been given the challenging option to continue her pregnancy while undergoing chemotherapy, with plans for a hysterectomy and omentectomy after the birth. The chemotherapy will again lead to hair loss, adding to the emotional burden she’s already endured.

The emotional and financial toll on the family has been immense. Steph's partner, Luke, has had to take time off work to support the family, impacting their income, especially as they rely on his overtime. Traveling from Warragul to Monash (Clayton and Moorabbin) for appointments, along with medication and treatment costs, has added to their financial strain. Furthermore, Steph is advised to start PARP inhibitors after her surgery, which have shown increased survival rates for ovarian cancer BRCA1. Since her cancer is stage 2, this treatment is covered under the PBS only for stage 3, potentially costing up to $20,000 if coverage cannot be secured.

Facing cancer once is incredibly tough, but dealing with it twice in 7 years (all before the age of 40), especially while pregnant and caring for two other children, is even more challenging. From my own experience, I understand how much support can make a difference. Even small contributions—such as funds for meals or unexpected expenses—can be immensely helpful during this time.

If you’re able to contribute, even a small donation can ease some of the financial stress Steph and her family are facing. Your generosity will support them through this difficult journey.

Please don’t feel pressured to donate if it’s not feasible; your support and kindness are deeply appreciated.

Thank you for your compassion and support.
