ONE COMMUNITY ONE PACK
Stephanie Kappus is a cheerleader for the Wolf Pack. She is a Junior at Nevada and is majoring in Community Health Science: Kinesiology and is hoping to attend graduate school and become a physician's assistant. This past week Stephanie had to withdraw from the University due to a rare tumor growing in her nasal cavity. It is a benign squamous papilloma with extensive chronic inflammation and an MRI shows a mass filling her right nasal cavity and maxillary sinus, which extends to the skull base. Doctors in Reno have referred her to the Keck Center at USC, where she had her first appointment today. Surgery is being scheduled and on the good side it looks like it can be removed endoscopically; but if it looks like an aggressive tumor when they get in to the surgery, they may need to drill on bone at the skull base and orbit of her eye, then graft with tissue from her septum and outer thigh to seal cerebral fluid in. If that happens then risk of permanent taste and smell loss are very possible. There will be an extensive recovery for Stephanie over the next few months, possible plastic surgery and certain physical therapy to regain the muscles and tissues in her face structure. All with the full intentions of coming back to the University of Nevada, in the spring semester 2016.
Stephanie has moved home to Las Vegas, to be with her family and closer to USC, for the fall semester. Stephanie has been raised by her mom and her only sibling is her younger 18 year old brother, that has severe Autism Spectrum Disorder. Stephanie’s brother needing assistance adds some other complications for her mom to be able to travel, as he need constant care and supervision.
We are getting together and asking for your help to raise money for travel expenses and upcoming costs that they are going to incur in the next few months that will add to the financial burden for everyone close to her.
This exceptional family is strong, positive and needs our love and support. Stephanie is part of our Wolf Pack family and we are cheering for her every step of the way! Every little bit will help as she faces this obstacle in the upcoming weeks and months. All help is welcome, both in Reno and Las Vegas. You can contact her coach Kim Anastassatos at [email redacted] / [phone redacted] or teammate Gabrielle Riecken at [email redacted] or [phone redacted].
