Please read and decide:
What began as a routine sonogram on her gallbladder ended two and half hours later with a CT scan and the words, “You have a large ovarian tumor on your right side. All of your medical records are being transferred to an oncology specialist in Dallas.” That was the moment that Stephanie’s reality shifted. Her immediate thoughts were “What’s next?” and “How/when do I do the unthinkable--tell my kids?”
Several consultations, procedures, biopsies, and surgeries later she discovered that the six months of discomfort and pain had originated in her ovaries and spread to other areas in her abdomen. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in January 2016. Two hospitalizations followed her hysterectomy, both due to unidentified infections and fever. She is currently receiving chemotherapy infusions and is expected to be reevaluated in June. Although her family has medical insurance, her policy changed in January and she is carried under what is known as a “non-friendly cancer” provider. The medical bills are daunting from surgeries, hospitalizations, and now her monthly chemo infusions and injections. The bills are already pouring in.
Although faced with a rapid onset of medical debt, Stephanie continues to work and serve the students and community in her local school district. She is dedicated to staff professional development and finding solutions and ideas which inspire educators to engage students in unconventional ways and connect educators globally. She is an advocate of “telling your story” and spreading the positive happenings beyond the school doors. Stephanie is passionate about finding the positive in all situations and seeking opportunities which cause her and others to grow.
Through this physically and emotionally challenging time, Stephanie continues to take her friends, family, and community on a very transparent voyage. Her behind the scenes look at cancer and the blessings that can surround you in times of perceived adversity are inspiring. She is living her one word this year, #HEAL. Instead of sulking about the hand given her, she works to help others with her experience. Love and care pour from every ounce of who she is. Please rally behind Stephanie and her family so that she can continue to inspire others, worry less about mounting medical costs, and #HEAL. Thank you for continuing to show humanity toward others, as we never know when it will be our turn in needing assistance.
