In July of 2020, Stephen's best friend and love of his life asked him to quit smoking for her. So after 24 years of smoking and multiple times of trying for other reasons he quit cold turkey. After quitting he developed a cough that eventually became troubling enough for Stephen to go to the doctor to get it looked into. In October of 2020, the doctors found a suspicious mass but blood work was normal so they began treating him for possible COPD/Asthma. The treatment never solved the problems Stephen was having with his breathing so on January 31st, 2021 he went back because he lost his voice and couldn't breathe. After more scans, the doctors discovered a mass they have now determined to be Adenocarcinoma Non-small Cell Carcinoma.
The treatment plan is 6 weeks of radiation the will take place 5 days a week, Monday through Friday. There will also be a once a week chemo appointment for the 6 weeks as well. At that time if the mass is small enough the plan is to go in and remove it. If it hasn't shrunk enough for removal he'll go for more radiation and chemo until the size is ideal for removal. When the time comes for removal comes the real challenge. The mass is located on the outside of his lung and pinching off the bronchial tube so that he can't breathe from that lung and then the tumor is also pushing against his heart. This is why the size of the mass has to be downsized before they attempt to remove it.
Stephen has spent his entire life working in the residential construction industry so he's lived with no insurance for that same time. The bills and doctor's visit fees are already starting to add up and now Stephen work. We have no idea what it cost to treat cancer with no insurance but know we need help.
