Just days after advancing to PhD candidacy — a major milestone that marked my transition as a graduate student in coursework to completing original dissertation research — I chose to celebrate by going on a coastal motorcycle night ride, a recently acquired skill and hobby. A moment of pride and relief from various years of hard work quickly turned into an unexpected moment that has impacted the trajectory of my academic career.
On the evening of September 25, 2025, I was in a serious motorcycle accident that left me with four broken ribs, a ruptured spleen, and a punctured lung. Thankfully, I was wearing appropriate protective gear that ultimately saved my life. As the only person involved in the accident; however, it now leaves me solely responsible for the financial impact.
I was scheduled to leave to Mexico City on October 1, 2025 for a long term research trip, critical to completing my dissertation. With consideration of the extent of my injuries and at the recommendation of my surgeons and physicians, I must postpone my trip until I have recovered. This delay not only disrupts the timeline of my academic progress, but also means I must remain in the U.S. without the ability to work.
I would like to request the support of my family, friends, and community to help cover:
- My last month of rent before I leave
- Health and motorist insurance deductibles
- Lost income while I recover
I feel incredibly grateful to be alive and am focused on healing and continuing to pursue the academic goals I’ve dedicated my life to. Completing my doctorate holds deep personal significance especially as a first-generation student. If anything, this experience has reinforced my commitment to my academic goals and reminded me of the value I hold for my life and the lives of those that I have had the pleasure of creating beautiful memories with.
Thank you for any help you may be able to provide, whether financial or through sharing this fundraising campaign.
My deepest gratitude,
Stephanie Martínez
