HELP FUND THE HOPE FOR STEPHAN KORNER
Friends, this is a call to action for our remarkable friend, Stephan Korner. This campaign’s goal is to raise funds in an effort to lessen the financial burden that is facing Stephan and his wife Christine in the upcoming year. In the next 12 months, Stephan will be undertaking 15 journeys from his home in Louisville KY to the world renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN.
Stephan, as many of you know was diagnosed with probable bulbar onset ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) in May of 2019 and then definitive bulbar ALS in late June of 2019. Patients diagnosed with ALS currently face a relentless progression of their disease with decreasing mobility, speech, swallowing and breathing. The personally devastating impact of a shortened life span is the reality. Approximately 30 percent of ALS presentations are diagnosed as bulbar onset ALS. In clinical terms, this means that Stephans’ manifestation of ALS is the rarest and most aggressive form of the disease. In human terms, it means that time is of the utmost importance.
Thanks to dedicated researchers, doctors and many prayers, there is new HOPE for Stephan and his family. On the morning of January 23rd, Stephan was notified of his acceptance into a leading edge stem cell clinical trial being conducted at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN. Spearheaded by Nathan P. Staff, M.D.,PH.D., and colleagues, Stephan will undergo mesenchymal stem cell harvesting, laboratory growth and re-delivery. The HOPE of slowing or stopping the relentless disease progression is alive and well!
This is where we take our stand to partner with Stephan and support him during this battle. Stephan opens doors for everyone that crosses his path. He leaves a wake of kindness, generosity, positivity and love wherever he goes. Since UPS hired Stephan in May of 2001 as a pilot, he has been the catalyst for numerous fellow aviators beginning their careers at UPS. For years, Stephan unselfishly spent hours of his personal time creating study guides that almost all of us on the 767 fleet have benefitted from too many times to count. Stephan has a deep rooted character trait of helping anyone with anything. Stephan and his wife Christine are raising their 2 daughters and 1 son in the Catholic Faith. By all standards, Stephan is an exceptional man who has a huge capacity of caring and loving his fellow man and God.
Friends, please reflect on what Stephan has selflessly done for each of you without being asked. With a resounding show of support, we need to take action now and do what we can to ease the burden of traveling back and forth to the Mayo Clinic. I humbly ask that you think about the situation that Stephan and his family are facing with the numerous challenges ahead. Let us give him the same First Class treatment he has given us for years.
