Step Up for Obaid

It has been ten years since I learned about Obaidullah, a child in Afghanistan. I saw his story on NBC Nightly News in 2013 when journalist Richard Engel reported on children recovering from war-related injuries in a Kabul hospital. (https://www.nbcnews.com/video/viewers-generosity-changes-afghan-boys-life-241247811595) Obaid was 12 years old. He lost both of his legs when a mortar struck his home in Wardak province. He was the only survivor out of five children in the house. Two siblings, an uncle and a cousin were killed.
I was affected by the trauma these children and their families were suffering. I had grandsons Obaid's age who were healthy and safe. I wanted to contribute in some way and felt compelled to reach out. Initially, I thought I would help with prosthetics and rehabilitation. But since the Red Cross was taking care of his physical needs, his father requested help for his son's education, as he could no longer ride a bike to school.
With funds that were raised for him on CrowdRise and my help, Obaid attended a private school in Kabul. He graduated at the top of his class, is proficient in English, and is motivated to secure a good future for himself despite many obstacles. Obaid dreams of studying abroad.
In 2021 he applied to study at NYU in Abu Dhabi but, unfortunately, he was denied. He has accepted the fact that, for now, he must continue his education in Afghanistan. This spring he enrolled at Kardan University. A generous NBC viewer made it possible for Obaid to purchase a new Dell laptop, necessary for a major in computer science. His dreams of becoming a doctor or studying political science and working in government have been set aside.
By US standards, the cost of tuition at Kardan is small. My goal of $8500 will cover books and supplies, plus four years of classes and transportation ($125 tuition/month, $50/month for taxi). It is a modest amount, yet far beyond a poor family's means.
