This summer, the Northampton Summer STEM Program will be offering leadership training to empower our students to become more proactive in the school community and the broader Northampton community. Liz Chen and Elaina Sabatine will be teaching the Leadership Development course to rising 11th and 12th grade students.
During the course, LD2 students will build Bigshot digital cameras from scratch and focus on navigating group dynamics.
Therefore, we need to raise $2500 in order to purchase 25 Bigshot digital camera kits ($92 total per kit, $83 per kit + $9 tax and shipping) in the next two weeks.*
Through this basic engineering project, students will learn how to resolve arising conflicts, deliver constructive feedback, and facilitate group discussions. Lastly, students will spend their last week building community advocacy and organizing skills by participating in a Photovoice project to identify and improve a community issue.
What is Photovoice?
Photovoice is a method for community-based participatory research (CBPR). In groups, LD2 students will identify a specific issue they see in their community and commit to better understanding it. Using the Bigshot cameras they build, the students will take pictures to learn more about the root causes of their identified issue. Through student-led facilitated discussions, students will utilize the SHOWED acronym (What do you See? What is Happening in the picture? How does it relate to Our lives? Why is this happening? How are we Empowered with our new knowledge? What can we Do about this?) to develop an action plan. Students will share their photographs and action plans with each other, with family members, and with others who reside in Northampton County at Community Night on Wednesday, July 23rd. We hope you can join us!
