Stella's tragic accident
Donation protected
On September 12, 2015, my dear friend Stella Qaraeen (maiden name Hanley) took her 4 children to football practice not knowing her (and her families) life would forever be altered. Stella and her oldest son were getting Gatorade out of her car for the team, when someone tries parking behind her in a no parking zone. The first attempt, he got very close to her then backed up and tried again. The third time, Stella hears a VROOM and out of the corner of her eye sees the car coming at her and her son. She pushed him out of the way, saving his life! However, she was in turn pinned between the cars. She fell to the ground and the driver continued to run her leg over. She never lost consciousness and was screaming for the man to get the car off of her while she desperately tried to rip her own leg out from under the wheel. He kept telling her "I can't, I can't." People heard the screams and came to help. They screamed at the man to get off of my friend, he responded to them also "I can't." 3 men jumped into action and physically lifted the car off of her and pulled her out. One of the men was hospitalized for 4 days because in lifting the car, he herniated a disk in his back. The driver said he had a seizure, however refused to go to the hospital to get the blood work that would prove that. Stella and the bystanders kept asking the man WHY? Why did you do that? He did not once say "I'm sorry," as someone feeling remorse would. This is thought by detectives (and most who have heard) to be a hate crime. She was rushed to St. Vincents and straight to a 7 hour surgery. This was the first of 5 surgeries that she will need. The main artery to her right leg was crushed and there was no blood flow. So the Doctors removed a vein from her left leg and transplanted it to her right. Thank God the transplant worked, for if it hadn't, her leg would have needed to be amputated. Her next surgery will tackle the complicated, open fracture to her femur, try to repair her shattered knee and the complicated, open fractures to her tibia and fibia. Her and her family have a long road to recovery. Stella will not be able to return to her house because it is multi-level with no bath or bedroom on the first floor. There are steps even to get into the house. Right now, prayers are needed and any help would be very much appreciated. Her children are 10, 6, 3 and 1 years old. Her 10 year old witnessed the whole thing, God help him. The 6, 3 and 1 year old were still in the car but are also traumatized. Stella was still nursing her baby and was forced to stop due to this. All of this and the man who did it is sitting comfortably at home. ALL lives matter.
