Help Save Our Steeple

We are People’s United Methodist Church: a small iconic New England church located on the edge of the Weskeag River in South Thomaston, Maine.  Our church was built in 1877. It is an historic and iconic building and the most visible and well-known site in South Thomaston. It is the center of activity for many outreach organizations in our area. We may be small in numbers but we are overwhelmingly large in heart, spirit and faith, giving mightily to support local, national and international programs that help those who may be in need.

Several years ago, our highly recognized, much photographed and artist favored bell tower, cupola and steeple began to disintegrate from years of harsh Maine weather.  First to fail was the eagle weather vane atop the steeple - blown over in high winds.  Next, our vintage bell, which peals throughout the village on Sunday mornings and on other special occasions, became more difficult to ring.  More recently, the railing was removed after several pieces of it had fallen to the ground.  The remaining structure needs to come down. The restoration can begin once the cupola and steeple are lowered to the ground. When completed, each piece will be hoisted back into place. 

Caregivers do a great job of caring for others but tend to care for themselves last. As a caregiving faith community, we find ourselves in need of your support to continue our mission of helping others and spreading the Good News of God’s Love and Christ’s extravagant welcome.

The research-planning phase of this restoration project revealed that our limited financial resources are not enough to Save our Steeple and complete the other important projects necessary to preserve our building: our place of worship; our place of hospitality and welcome; our place of mission and service. We need your help.
