STEAM Reptile and Animal Program for Room 523
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Haley Burgess and I am a 6th grade Science and Math teacher at Johnnie Cochran Middle School in Los Angeles, Ca. We are striving to implement a blossoming and sustainable reptile and animal program in our school. We are one of the highest priority schools in the district and our students have a great amount of need. Incorporating animals into the classroom offers a unique perspective on biology, ecology, and animal behavior. By interacting with reptiles such as snakes, lizards, and turtles, our students can gain valuable insights into topics like adaptation, life cycles, and biodiversity. Not to mention, caring for and studying these animals promotes responsibility, empathy, and respect for all living beings.
We currently have one bearded dragon in the class and the impact has been immense. Students are excited to come to class and are learning proper, ethical care and husbandry of animals in a enclosure that mimics their natural environment. Students are also entering a unit where they will be incubating chicken eggs and hatching them into chicks. These programs create the hands on learning environment that all students crave and deserve. We want to grow our reptile program to be a thriving part of our STEAM curriculum for all of our school to access. We pride ourselves on providing the absolute best care for for our animals and teaching staff and students alike what proper care for animals looks like.
Any and all contributions make a huge impact on our students. All donations will go to animals, their enclosures, needed supplies and feed, related curriculum, and enrichment for the animals.
Animals offer unconditional love and non-judgmental companionship, creating a safe space for students to express emotions without fear of rejection. Their presence can reduce anxiety, stress, and depression, promoting emotional healing and stability. Interacting with animals also releases oxytocin and endorphins, which elevate mood and improve overall well-being. Moreover, caring for animals fosters a sense of responsibility and purpose, rebuilding self-esteem and confidence. Through these interactions, students can learn valuable life skills like empathy, communication, and trust, aiding in their recovery journey.
Thank you for your support!
