Cristian Palacios Urquieta is a brave 18-year-old young man from La Paz, Bolivia. He was once a talented soccer player and during childhood he tried out for some of the most important clubs in South America, including Santos and Corinthians in Brazil. Now he is fighting for his life.
Before it could even begin, his career as a soccer player was over. At 15, he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma on his knee and tibia, which is a type of cancer that starts in the bones. The cancer has spread (metastasized) to the lungs, 7th and 9th rib and others bones, which is terminal.
In Bolivia there is no institution that can help Cristian and was only offered palliative care. Due to the advanced grade of his cancer, no hospital or institution in Latin America agreed to treat him.
Now Cristian is in Los Angeles, California for treatment and he lost his right leg by amputation. After nearly a year of chemotherapy he will need a lung surgery. His tumors in his lungs are so big, one measures about 9,7 x 5,6 x 11,5; and the other one measures 10 x 6,7 x 8.
But now he cannot keep going with treatments because he does not have any medical insurance to cover the expenses, due to him being foreign.
His mother, Maribel, made a huge effort to raise money for this cause, spending and selling everything she had, including their house, cars, and land.
She does not have enough money to continue the treatments of chemotherapy for Cristian, even less for the future surgery of his lungs.
Cristian is making headlines continuously due to his charisma and positive attitude towards life. He has become a spokesperson to all the children in Bolivia with cancer, and has been an example for many with his stories about perseverance and hope.
As of beginning April, Cristian will no longer have the money to pay for his chemotherapy expenses. Without his chemotherapy treatment, he faces a life or death situation.
