Ciao everyone,

my name is Enrico, I’m Italian and I’m living in Melbourne. I came to Australia 2 years ago to start a new life, a completely different and challenging one. I realised that being part of a much more global community is what makes me happy. Being able to meet people with different cultures, backgrounds, and beliefs is what intrigues me and fill me with significance. I come from a little town called Sovizzo, in Vicenza’s province, north-east of Italy. The life I was living back there wasn’t full of excitement, I felt that I was missing something, life’s opportunities and experiences. So here I am in Melbourne, my second home now and I’m glad I made that step. I would call it: leap of faith. After my Working Holiday Visa year, I decided to go back to school and study to improve my knowledge, so I applied for the Student visa right after it. Now I am studying for a diploma in Travel and Tourism Management and what I am aiming for is the get a Bachelor in Tourism and Hospitality Management at the William Angliss Institute, a four-year path.

Everything was going pretty well until, last year around June, I got sick. It was a type of sickness I’ve never had before and that I couldn’t understand. I couldn’t walk properly, my balance was affected, dizziness and vertigo did not let me work for a period of time. I had to go and see different doctors trying to understand the illness and also face medical expenses I didn’t plan to have. After several months in which I totally lost the hearing on my left ear and the sensibility of half of my face, I suddenly got better. I was over the moon but I wasn't feeling the same as before. I went back to work, my life was normal again. But in January this year, the unexpected happened: I started to have problems at my teeth which led to spending more than $2000 in dentists and, despite that and all the pain, losing one tooth because I could not afford the treatment to save it. Once more, I had to use my savings and, because I’m a student with limited working hours, there was not much to take.

Later on this year in April, after getting sick again (specifically having part of my left arm numb) I was with doctors again. I was told to do further brain MRI scans and blood tests, and, after getting the results, I was finally informed of what had been happening since last year. I’ve been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, a disease that affects the brain and disrupts or interrupts the communication between the brain and the body. Unfortunately, there is no cure at the moment but thank the Reciprocal Health Agreement between Italy and Australia, I can treat it through the Medicare system (usually for about 6 months). It affects your life, it makes you think you are weak and not capable to do things as before, it makes you ill and all of this during this terrible pandemic of Covid-19.

Now I’ve been stood down from work (I was working in a hotel) and my project of getting to university is in danger. What I am asking for is Your help to make my dream come true, to make possible what I see impossible now. To start my path and not to have this disease to stop me. I don’t know when I will be going back to work, as many others, unfortunately. But if I could somehow manage to pay for the first year's tuition fees (around $21500), costs of visa, and extra fees (around $2000), that would be a great help to me. I am basing my cost calculation on this 2020 fee, but they will surely be higher for next year. My Visa is expiring this November 2020 and I had been planning to start the bachelor course early of February 2021.

mi chiamo Enrico, sono italiano e vivo a Melbourne. Sono venuto in Australia 2 anni fa per iniziare una nuova vita, completamente diversa e stimolante. Mi sono reso conto che far parte di una comunità molto più globale è ciò che mi rende felice. La vita che vivevo prima non era molto eccitante, sentivo che mi mancava qualcosa, le opportunità e le esperienze della vita. Quindi eccomi a Melbourne, la mia seconda casa adesso e sono felice di aver fatto quel passo. Lo chiamerei: salto della fede. Dopo il mio primo anno con visto Working Holiday, decisi di tornare tra i banchi di scuola per migliorare le mie conoscenze, quindi feci domanda per il visto studentesco. Ora sto studiando per un diploma in Travel and Tourism Management e quello che vorrei ottenere in futuro è una laurea in Tourism and Hospitality Management presso il William Angliss Institute, un percorso di 4 anni.

Tutto stava andando abbastanza bene fino a quando, l'anno scorso, verso giugno, iniziai a sentirmi male. Era un tipo di malore che non avevo mai avuto prima e che non riuscivo a capire. Non riuscivo a camminare correttamente, il mio equilibrio era compromesso, le improvvise vertigini non mi permisero di lavorare per un periodo di tempo. Dovetti visitare diversi medici per cercare di capire il mio problema e anche affrontare spese mediche che non avevo pianificato. Dopo diversi mesi in cui persi completamente l'udito dell'orecchio sinistro e la sensibilità di metà del mio viso, improvvisamente migliorai. Ero al settimo cielo ma non mi sentivo lo stesso di prima. Tornai al lavoro, la mia vita era di nuovo normale. Ma a gennaio di quest'anno accadde l’imprevedibile: iniziai ad avere problemi ai denti che mi portarono a spendere più di $2000 in dentisti e, nonostante questo e tutto il dolore, a perdere un dente perché non potei permettermi il trattamento richiesto per salvarlo. Ancora una volta, dovetti utilizzare i miei risparmi e, poiché sono uno studente con orario di lavoro limitato, non si trattava di molto.

Più tardi, precisamente quest'anno ad aprile, dopo essermi ammalato di nuovo (in particolare avendo una parte del mio braccio sinistro intorpidito) ero di nuovo in compagnia di medici. Mi fu detto di fare ulteriori risonanze magnetiche al cervello con annessi esami del sangue e, dopo aver ottenuto i risultati, fui finalmente informato su ciò che mi stava accadendo dallo scorso anno. La diagnosi era Sclerosi Multipla, una malattia che colpisce il cervello e che disturba o interrompe gli impulsi nervosi tra cervello e corpo. Sfortunatamente, non esiste una cura al momento, ma grazie all'Accordo di salute reciproca tra Italia e Australia, la posso trattare attraverso il sistema sanitario Medicare (di solito valido 6 mesi ). Colpisce la tua vita, ti fa pensare di essere debole e incapace di fare le cose come prima, ti fa ammalare e tutto questo durante questa terribile pandemia di Covid-19.

Ora, sono impossibilitato a lavorare (lavoravo in un hotel) e il mio progetto di andare all'università è in pericolo. Quello che chiedo è il vostro aiuto per realizzare il mio sogno, per rendere possibile ciò che vedo impossibile ora. Per iniziare il mio percorso e non lasciare che questa malattia mi fermi. Non so quando tornerò al lavoro, come molti altri purtroppo. Ma se potessi in qualche modo riuscire a pagare le tasse universitarie iniziali del primo anno (circa $21500), costi del visto e le tasse extra (circa $2000), ciò sarebbe di enorme aiuto per me. Sto basando il mio calcolo sui costi di quest’anno, ma saranno sicuramente più elevati per il prossimo anno. Il mio visto scade a novembre 2020 e vorrei iniziare il corso di laurea all'inizio di febbraio 2021.
