As many of you know, my dad, Shaun, has been bravely fighting stage 4 esophageal cancer. This past year has been filled with highs and lows, but through it all, we’ve held onto hope and each other.
We were in the middle of a new chemotherapy plan, but unfortunately, the most recent scan showed that it’s not working as we’d hoped. The cancer in his liver has continued to grow, and new tumors have appeared in his bones, including his shoulders and legs. Because of how quickly the cancer is spreading, the doctors have started a more aggressive approach, a combination of an oral chemo pill (Lonsurf) and IV infusions (Ramucirumab) every other week. He also recently completed another round of radiation to help target the bone areas and manage pain.
The doctors have told us that there won’t be any more breaks from treatment moving forward. And while Shaun is still incredibly positive, and we all still believe in the possibility of beating this, we’re also very aware that time is something to cherish, protect, and treasure now more than ever.
This fundraiser isn’t just about the next round of medical bills; it’s about memories!
One of Shaun’s biggest wishes is to take each of his six kids (including his sons-in-law) on a small, one-on-one trip, even just simple outings, to create memories that will last a lifetime. Thanks to the electric scooter we were able to get, those moments are becoming possible. Walking long distances has become much harder for him, but with the scooter, he can focus on what matters most: laughing with his kids, exploring new places together, and being present.
As Shaun says, “Terminal is the future, but memories are created now and last forever.”
Every donation, no matter the amount, helps us cover the ongoing medical costs and gives our family the chance to focus on living, not just fighting. These trips aren’t just getaways. They are a gift of time, connection, and joy in the middle of an incredibly hard chapter.
Even just passing this link along to others who might be able to help makes a big difference, and for those who simply want to support, this page is here for that too.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for standing with us. Your love, prayers, and generosity are what keep us going.
With gratitude,
The Rich Family
