Stay Strong & Sing On for Kathy

Hello, everyone. My name is Jeana Persson, and I'm a close friend of the Smith family. Like many of you, I've followed Kathy's cancer journey for the last 18 months. It's been heartbreaking to see all the challenges she and her girls have faced. Like you, I've wanted to respect their privacy and allow the family to handle all the decisions for Kathy's health care. I know I read these updates and feel so helpless sometimes. I want to help, but don't know what the family needs, or what Kathy specifically needs.
I spoke with Laurie today. While things are moving ahead with her treatment in Phoenix at the Mayo Clinic, there are many challenges that lie ahead. Kathy found out today her short term disability claim through her school district was denied, after many months of back and forth, processing the claim with medical records. (It was a long shot since her cancer was a pre-existing condition, but they hoped for some assistance.) She also had to resign from her job since she won't be healthy enough to return to her position by early February. She has excellent insurance, but the medical bills are still coming in. Her immediate family has been pitching in for her apartment and utilities in Utah. They will hold onto it just in case her treatment resumes in Utah in the next 6-8 weeks. There are many unknowns right now, but the family is taking one day at a time.
If you're one of the many people in this group who have asked how to help, the opportunity is here. I have set up a GoFundMe account on behalf of Kathy. This fund is strictly to provide assistance with ongoing medical bills, housing in Phoenix, groceries and the like. It's to provide Kathy and the girls with some peace of mind that the only thing they need to worry about is Kathy's treatment and her getting stronger.
If you can contribute any amount at all, it will go towards the care of this wonderful lady who has touched all of our lives with her special love and light. I know any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Stay strong and sing on!
Thank you so much!
