We ask that you give generously to this fundraiser to help the Ghale family set up a GOAT FARM in the Darje Village, Nepal.
This goat farm will:
- Provide the Ghale's with a regular and sustainable source of income
- Provide food for the local community
- Provide food for sale beyond the community
- Provide meaningful employment & job security
- Allow for a breeding project to be established
- Allow the local economy to grow sustainably
ABOUT THE PROJECT:
Hello! My name is Lyn Taylor and I operate an International Adventure Travel Company based in Sydney Australia. For the past two decades, I have traveled to Nepal twice a year, every year, and in this time, I have grown a close relationship with the Ghale Family.
Before the COVID-19 Crisis, the Ghale's primary source of income was directly linked to international tourism. Many of the men in the family have worked with me as mountain trekking guides and the family home as a homestay for many of my adventure travel groups. They have guided 100s of international travelers on treks throughout the Himalayas. There is something so special about Nepal and it is heartbreaking to think that vulnerable families, already facing poverty are at serious risk of further hardship during this crisis.
I have come to see the Ghale's like a second family and have supported them in various ways over years. With the help of my travel community, we have raised funds to sponsor their children's schooling, raise money for the local village school amenities, support village repairs after the 2015 earthquakes and now throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic, provide immediate financial relief. However, it's not sustainable to rely on one of the donations to carry the family through the uncertainty of this crisis. And with no signs of international tourism returning any time soon, the Ghales have come up with a plan for financial sustainability - a Goat Farm!
A Goat Farm is a fantastic plan that will provide the Ghale's with a regular and sustainable source of income, meaningful employment, and job security. Not only that, but it will also provide food for the local community and for sale beyond the community.
However, setting up a goat farm will take several months to develop, and has quite significant start-up costs. For example, She-goats can be purchased at a starting price of Rs.17,000 up to Rs. 20,000 (Approx AUD $200). This price increases from here depending on the breed and weight of the she-goat. In Nepal, the male Boer goat that is used for breeding is somewhat more expensive than other goats. It ranges from Rs. 70,000 up to Rs. 1,00,000 (approx. $1000) or more!
Your financial support will help to cover initial expensive start-up costs and allow for a breeding project to be established. This will in turn have a flow-on effect that will help the local economy to grow sustainably.
As you can imagine this project will take quite a lot of hard work and time to get off the ground. But the benefit of this is that it is giving the community a goal to focus on. It is all part of a new beginning for the Ghale family. Even when the mountain trails reopen and people start trekking again, the goat farm will continue to provide income and food for members of Ghale's community.
So far, our community has raised $4300 - thank you! And now, we would love to ask that you would share our story with your friends and family so that we can fully support the startup costs of this project.
We are off to a really strong, generous, and encouraging start as we look to sustainably support the Ghale family and impact their wider family community positively as a result.
