Dell is a husband, father and genuinely giving man. He is always happy and never thinks twice about sacrificing his time and resources to help others. Dell lives a healthy and active lifestyle. He draws, travels and cooks a hell of a meal.
On June 2, 2017, Dell & his wife Juliet flew down to Southern California to attend a friend's wedding. On that evening, Dell suffered a fall as he was descending a flight of stairs which injured his C3 to C5 vertebrae and left him unconscious and paralyzed from the neck down. As the MRI would show, Dell was living with a rare genetic condition (OPLL) that calcified his spinal column so much that the spinal column was less than half the diameter of a normal male of his age and ethnicity. Oddly, OPLL is mostly an Asian condition and predominantly found in Japanese males. Emergency spine surgery was performed to reduce the strain on his spinal cord to allow room for swelling and eventually healing.
Dell has finally been discharged from the UW rehab center and will continue to work with Physical and Occupational Therapists.
Meanwhile, Dell and Juliet are working with insurance to help cover the costs for surgery and rehabilitation. Additional expenses include anything that insurance will not cover such as at home equipment and medical supplies, a ramp and new door to the home.
We are so thankful that doctors were able to detect the disease and that Dell had a successful surgery. However the journey has just begun for our family and we need all the support we can get. For those of you who have already donated, our family is grateful for your support and hope that you can share this story to others.
