What is Statecraft, and Statecraft: Rochester?

Statecraft is a community songwriting project that utilizes group songwriting and performance in order to build communities.

We are finally ready to release Statecraft to the world after 16 months of brainstorming and planning. Now it is up to you all, the community, to decide if you want Statecraft.

Statecraft truly is the musical adventure of a lifetime as we seek to work with at least one community from each state on a Statecraft community song, with each songwriting process tailored and dedicated to improving the specific issues of participating communities.

We need your help in order to make this wonderful musical adventure possible. We are raising $4,500 in order to get started with our first Statecraft community songwriting process in Rochester, Minnesota -- where community members from all over the city have expressed a profound feeling of disconnection.

Rochester Minnesotans have expressed feeling disconnected physically and emotionally from one another, as well as community resources and what’s happening within the city. We’ve crafted a process for group songwriting and performance tailored towards developing deeper and more meaningful connections between the participants and the greater Rochester community. We need your help in order to make this dream a reality.

Statecraft: Rochester will be done in 3 phases

          Phase one: Community Input

Phase one of Statecraft Rochester consists of three community gatherings. All Rochester Minnesotans are welcome to get involved by first speaking with one another about their personal feelings and experiences of disconnection and connection in Rochester, Minnesota.

          Phase two: Song Creation

Phase two of Statecraft: Rochester is the creation of the community song. The input of community members from phase one will be given to a group of local lyricists and musicians who will then turn the community’s input into song.

          Phase three: Rehearsal and Performance

Phase three consists of community rehearsals and a performance. All who participated in the phase one conversations are encouraged to come back and learn the newly created Rochester community song in order to perform it as one group at the Rochester Symphony and Chorale’s MLK and the American Dream concert in April 2018. All participants regardless of their musical background and skill level are welcome to take part in this once in a lifetime opportunity to perform an original song they've written with the full backing of the Rochester Symphony!

All the while the Statecraft team will be observing and encouraging the development of personal and professional connections not only between participants and others who participate, but the greater Rochester community as well.

This is a truly unique experience for all Rochester Minnesotans to see and experience one another through meaningful dialogue with a common goal.

None of this will be possible, however, if we are unable to meet our financial goal! An investment in Statecraft: Rochester is not just an investment in a community, but in the idea of music being more than just a tool for entertainment and advertising.

We have now the opportunity to use music in truly transformative ways that unlock the greatest unifying potential in all of our communities. And who knows, perhaps one day you or a member of your family might be part of a Statecraft community. We want to take this project into all states throughout our country. Help us start this wonderful work by considering a donation to our cause! Anything you can provide will be welcomed and cherished.
