Hi, my name is Pam; I am fundraising for my sister, Starr Ricks. On December 19th, 2021, my healthy, vibrant 68-year-old sister's life changed in an instant. One false step coming downstairs in her home sent her tumbling down the stairs, hitting her head against the wall breaking her neck and crushing her spinal cord paralyzing her from the chest down. After a stay in a critical care institute in Richmond, she was sent to Sheltering Arms Institute in Richmond, a rehabilitation center specializing in spinal cord injuries, to help her adjust to her situation and to teach family members how to care for her. She just came home on March 2nd.

Starr has her mental faculties but cannot move her extremities and will require 24-hour care, which Medicare will not pay. Some of the massive expenses will be covered by Medicare, but many will not be covered in full or not at all. A handicap van with a wheelchair ramp, shower chair, professional care, and modifications to her home are just some of the things Medicare will not cover.

Starr is someone who never sits still. She is always on to some new project at home when not busy with her cleaning business.

Starr's husband, two children, and eight grandchildren provide her with the will to go on from this devastating tragedy.

The goal is to keep Starr in her own home. This is going to be extremely difficult without help from professionals. The family will assist, but she will need funds for additional help to give the 24/7 care she will need.
