They could have named her Sunshine to match her sunny disposition and positive personality. Instead, they chose the name Starlit.

Born in the summer of 2013, Starlit had a rough introduction to the world, suffering from Neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy. A waiting game followed to determine brain damage: her principal damage is to the left hemisphere with scattered injury elsewhere. Diagnoses since then are cerebral palsy, dystonia and epilepsy – the latest – with recent night seizures.

She is facing her second major surgery in mid- April 2024 with an estimated 2-3 more operations before adulthood. This surgery on her right hip will help keep the hip from popping out of the joint and address the growing 1” discrepancy between the two legs. The operation will take place at the Shriner’s Hospital on Oak Park Ave. in Chicago. This facility is about 80 miles from the family home in Machesney Park, IL.

This appeal is for help with uncovered expenses for the surgery and recovery period. Gas for an estimated 7 trips to Shriners is $280. The family is required to provide a hospital bed ($500), side table ($150), reclining wheelchair ($300) and various supplies such as pads, wraps, etc. ($250). Mom’s meals for a month at the hospital with Starlit ($21/day for 34 days = $714). But the biggest expense will be mom’s lost wages. Stephanie is an excellent waitress at two area restaurants. Her lost wages for 7 weeks will be $5,600). Total calculated expenses are $7,794 and there will probably be more smaller items.
